The short answer: The best finance MCP server depends on the job. Era connects live balances and transactions to Claude or ChatGPT. Opula covers manually entered holdings, including assets that bank feeds miss, and adds rule-based projections. Alpha Vantage and OpenBB are built for market research. Stripe handles business payments. Alpaca can reach a brokerage account and place trades. X1 is built for a different problem: keeping a complex household's documents, decisions, permissions, and professional handoffs in one governed record.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. In plain English, it is a standard that lets an AI assistant use outside tools and data with permission. The protocol may be the same across products. The access is not.

Finance MCP products now fall into five distinct groups:

This distinction matters. “Can the AI access financial data?” is too broad a question. A more useful question is: what can it see, what can it change, and what happens after the chat ends?
Every entry had to have current first-party documentation and a clear financial job. We looked at four things:
- Purpose. The actual work the server handles.
- Authority. Whether it reads data, changes records, or can move money.
- Maintenance. Whether the company behind the financial service maintains the connection.
- Continuity. Whether useful context survives beyond one conversation.
We did not rank GitHub wrappers that rely on unofficial access to a consumer finance app. Some may be useful. They are hard to evaluate as lasting choices for sensitive data.
Best for: Someone who wants Claude, ChatGPT, or another compatible assistant to work with connected accounts and transactions.
Era is the most important new entrant in this category. Its Context product is a personal finance MCP server. According to Era, it can give a connected AI access to balances, transactions, goals, categories, and memory that follows the user across AI clients.
The practical appeal is obvious. Ask Claude what changed in dining spend, switch to ChatGPT later, and keep the relevant context in Era instead of rebuilding it inside each assistant.
Era's free plan includes two connected accounts and read-only MCP access. Paid plans add broader history, more accounts, editing, rules, and higher usage limits. Its current pricing page lists paid plans from $7.99 per month when billed yearly. Some money-movement and partner-sharing features are marked “coming soon,” so feature labels deserve a close read.
Authority: The free tier is read-only. Higher tiers can allow edits, and Era describes transfer and automation capabilities with explicit approval.
What it does not replace: A tax return, trust, insurance policy, advisor response, and family decision are not the same thing as connected transactions. Era is strongest when the job begins with account data.

Best for: A complex household whose financial life crosses accounts, business entities, documents, an advisor, a CPA, and an attorney, and that wants governed context available in Claude, Codex, ChatGPT, or Grok.

X1 is an AI family office, not a market feed or a bank-data pipe. It keeps the household and its professionals working from the same approved picture. The product brings source documents, connected information, open questions, permissions, decisions, and professional handoffs into a continuing record.
That creates a different kind of AI conversation. The useful result is not merely “your balance changed.” It is closer to: this is the source behind the finding, this is what the household approved, this is what the CPA received, and this is what came back.
X1's governed MCP tools can read approved context and support controlled additions to the household record. Consequential changes require a human confirmation. X1 does not trade, move money, file taxes, or make licensed professional judgments.
X1 also publishes an open-source agent skill that defines a source-backed capital-call workflow. The current public release installs in Grok Build, and Grok's custom connector flow can connect to X1 MCP through OAuth. Authority: Access is tied to the person, household, and role. Human approval sits between a proposal and a consequential record change.
What it does not replace: X1 is not the choice for stock quotes, order execution, payment processing, or a simple monthly budget.
If the personal finance question is mostly “what happened in my accounts?”, Era is the cleaner fit. If it is “what did we decide, what proves it, who owns the next step, and did the professional close the loop?”, that is X1's ground.

Best for: Someone who wants Claude or ChatGPT to reason over manually entered holdings, alternative assets, or non-US assets without connecting a bank or brokerage account.
Opula is a hosted MCP connector and a useful counterpoint to Era. It does not sync financial institutions. The user records holdings and cash flows in plain language, and Opula makes that ledger available inside supported AI clients. Its public product pages describe support for real estate, private or unlisted equity, physical assets, crypto, and holdings in several currencies.
The free ledger includes net worth, savings rate, cash flow, holdings, concentration, and basic scenarios. Opula Pro adds market and wealth briefs, risk measures, valuation data, and Monte Carlo financial-independence projections. Its current pricing page lists Pro at $9.99 per month or $99 per year.
Authority: Opula can read, add, edit, and delete records in its own ledger when the user asks. It cannot connect to a brokerage, place a trade, or move money.
Meaningful limit: Manual entry works for assets that lack a clean data feed, but it also places the burden of keeping values and transactions current on the user.

Best for: A founder or finance operator whose revenue operation runs through Stripe.
Stripe's official remote MCP server lets an AI agent use Stripe API tools and search Stripe's documentation. It connects through OAuth, so access is tied to an authenticated Stripe session rather than a copied spreadsheet.
Useful questions include:
- Which invoices are still open?
- What changed in refunds or disputes?
- Which subscriptions need review?
- Where are failed payments concentrated?
Authority: The available tools can interact with Stripe records. Check the exact permissions in the connected session before using it on live business data.
Meaningful limit: Stripe provides a detailed view of payments. It does not know the business's full books, tax position, payroll, estate plan, or household priorities.

Best for: Investors, researchers, and builders who want structured market data inside an AI workflow.
Alpha Vantage maintains an official MCP server with local and remote connection options. Its tools cover stock prices, historical series, fundamentals, earnings material, foreign exchange, cryptocurrencies, commodities, and economic indicators.
This is a good example of a focused server. Ask for a company's recent price history or compare reported financials, and the assistant can call a defined data tool instead of relying on whatever it remembers.
Authority: Read-only data access. Authentication uses an Alpha Vantage key or OAuth on its hosted endpoint.
Meaningful limit: Market data can improve research. It does not know why a security is held, which entity owns it, how it relates to a trust, or what a professional has approved.

Best for: An analyst or technical investor who wants several financial data sources behind one research environment.
OpenBB's MCP package can expose GET endpoints from an OpenBB data platform installation as MCP tools. This is broader and more configurable than a single market-data feed. It also asks more of the user. You are running or connecting a research platform, selecting data providers, and deciding which endpoints the assistant can reach.
Authority: Primarily research access. The precise scope depends on the OpenBB installation and providers you configure.
Meaningful limit: This is a research toolkit, not a ready-made personal finance app. Someone looking for a quick view of monthly spending will find Era, Monarch, or Copilot Money easier.

Best for: A developer or experienced trader who wants an AI client to query an Alpaca account, research markets, and manage orders.
Alpaca's official server exposes account, portfolio, market-data, watchlist, and trading tools. The current documentation lists 65 tools. It also supports toolset filtering, which means a user can leave trading tools out and connect only the read-oriented account and market-data functions.
That separation is worth using. A server that reads a position is not the same risk as a server that can place or cancel an order.
Authority: Read and write. Live trading is possible when enabled. Alpaca defaults its example configuration to paper trading and documents a read-oriented toolset option.
Meaningful limit: Alpaca is a brokerage and market workflow, not a household planning record. AI-generated orders can still be wrong, incomplete, or inconsistent with the rest of a financial plan.

Best for: A fintech team already approved for Plaid production access.
Plaid is often described in MCP roundups as a direct way for consumers to connect a bank account to Claude. That is not what Plaid's current official MCP documentation describes.
Plaid offers a hosted Dashboard MCP server for production diagnostics and analytics. Its tools cover areas such as Item debugging, Link conversion, and usage. Plaid also offers local development tooling for documentation search, mock data, sandbox tokens, and webhook simulation.
Authority: Production diagnostics and developer tooling, controlled by Plaid credentials and scopes.
Meaningful limit: This is for teams building and operating Plaid integrations. It is not a retail product that a household connects to ask about last month's grocery spending.

Before connecting financial data to any AI client, write down the answers to these four questions:
- What exact records can the server read?
- Can it edit a record, send a payment, or place an order?
- Where does approval happen before a consequential action?
- Can access be revoked without rebuilding the underlying account?
Then start with the narrowest useful scope. For Alpaca, that might mean paper trading or market-data-only tools. For personal finance, it may mean read-only access before allowing edits. For a household record, it means knowing who can see, propose, confirm, and remove access.
Pick one real question that currently requires manual copying. Connect the smallest official tool that can answer it. Keep the first test read-only when the product allows it.
After a week, look at what is still missing. If the assistant has transactions but not source documents, or data but no record of a decision, adding more feeds will not close that gap. That is a different job.

Era is a strong option for connected balances and transactions. Opula is built for manually entered holdings, alternative assets, and projections. X1 serves a different need: source-backed household decisions, permissions, and coordination with financial professionals.
Some can. Alpaca can place orders when trading tools and live credentials are enabled. Era describes transfer and automation capabilities on paid plans, with approval controls and some features still marked as coming soon. Other servers, such as Alpha Vantage, are read-only data sources.
Plaid's current official MCP products are built for Plaid customers and developers. The hosted server covers production diagnostics and analytics. It is not presented as a consumer personal-finance connector.
Safety depends on the server, the client, the permissions, and the data involved. An official server with OAuth may reduce some connection risk, but it does not make every AI output correct. Review access scope, use the narrowest useful permissions, and keep consequential financial work under human control.
