Connect X1 to Codex
Check a household file in Codex, with sources.
Run two commands and Codex can check the X1 record while you prepare a client brief or work through your family's files, showing which document supports each point.
A household folder usually has the K-1, the deed, the trust, and the CPA's notes in different places. With X1 connected, Codex can check what those files actually establish and draft the next question, instead of treating a file name as proof.
Connect X1 to Codex in four steps.
Two commands in the CLI. Have an X1 account with at least one document in it before you start. Prefer menus? The IDE extension works too, and the FAQ below has those clicks.

Add X1
Run codex mcp add x1 --url https://mcp.x1wealth.com/mcp. Codex saves a server called x1. If you'd rather edit config, add an [mcp_servers.x1] table with url = "https://mcp.x1wealth.com/mcp" to ~/.codex/config.toml or to a project's .codex/config.toml.

Sign in with X1
Run codex mcp login x1. Your browser opens the X1 sign-in. Sign in with the X1 account you want Codex to work from and approve the access.

Check the connection
Run codex mcp list to see the saved server. Inside a Codex session, type /mcp to confirm x1 is active.

Ask one question you can check
Ask "Use X1: what does X1 have on file for this household's trust?" and open the document Codex cites. If no source comes back, check that x1 is active in /mcp and that the trust is in X1 and open to your account.

What Codex can do with X1.
- Answer questions from the household record, with the document behind each answer.
- Search the documents your access allows for the passage that supports a fact.
- Show the businesses, trusts, and properties in the record, and the changes waiting for confirmation.
- With an X1 professional account, also draft replies, meeting briefs, and document requests for you to review and send.
- Keep the work moving within what your X1 account allows, and ask for your approval in X1 when a change needs it.
Codex reaches what your X1 account can reach. If the record doesn't cover something, X1 says so, and the gap becomes a question to send instead of a guess in the brief.
If a step doesn't work.
- Codex can't find x1
- Run codex mcp list. If x1 isn't there, run codex mcp add x1 --url https://mcp.x1wealth.com/mcp again, or check the [mcp_servers.x1] table and its URL in your config.
- X1 is saved but not available in a session
- Type /mcp in the session and check that x1 is active and its tools aren't turned off in your config.
- Your sign-in has expired
- Run codex mcp login x1 again and finish the X1 sign-in in your browser.
- The IDE saved X1 but shows no tools
- Choose Restart extension, then open MCP servers and choose Authenticate if it asks.
- Sign-in fails with a redirect error
- If sign-in fails with a redirect error, use the exact callback address Codex shows you. Don't substitute one from another tool.
Questions about Codex and X1.
- Is this the same connection as ChatGPT?
- No. Codex keeps its own server list, so add X1 there even if it's already connected in ChatGPT.
- Can I use a free X1 account?
- Yes. A free X1 account connects the same way, with a vault that holds up to 10 documents.
- Can I keep X1 in a project config?
- Yes. Codex reads a project's .codex/config.toml, as well as the one in your home folder, once you've marked the project as trusted.
- What if two documents disagree?
- Ask Codex to show both source passages side by side, so you can see the difference and decide, or send it to the professional who can.
- Can I set it up in the IDE instead?
- Yes. In the IDE extension, open the gear menu, choose MCP servers, then Add server. Name it x1, choose Streamable HTTP, paste https://mcp.x1wealth.com/mcp, choose Save, then Restart extension, and choose Authenticate when it asks you to sign in. The CLI and the IDE share the same configuration.
- How do I disconnect X1?
- Run codex mcp logout x1 to sign out, or codex mcp remove x1 to take it off your server list.
- Can Codex move money through X1?
- No. X1 doesn't trade or move money, in Codex or anywhere else.
